Yoga Poses Helps Army Veterans

maybe help rid them of any chemical dependence they may have fallen in to while trying to self medicate. The yoga practices, combined with meditation and traditional therapy are making a huge difference
One program being used to much success is called iRest (short for Integrative Restoration). iRest is a uniquely designed yoga program that has deep rootes in Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is loosely translated to “yoga sleep” and it a sleep like state that yogis enter into when they are deep into meditation.
None other than Walter Reed Army Hospital is currently employing it to treat (quite successfully) our soldiers afflicted with PTSD. It helps them understand and deal with the physical and mental wounds that they have and will most likely deal with on a daily basis for the rest of their lives.
iRest has been found to help with such PTSD symptoms as: anger, hypersensitivity, insomnia, trauma, stress, chronic pain, physical injury, over-medication, aversion to crowds (agoraphobia), and chemical dependency.
How does iRest work? iRest employs relaxation through self examination and meditation. It takes the the soldier through the 10 steps or protocols of :1) setting conscious intentions, 2)creative visualization, mindfulness of a variety of human experiential domains such as 3)body,4) breath, 5)energy, 6)emotions, 7)cognitions and 8)joy, and 9) the resourceful strategy of shifting the focus of attention between opposites, then holding both opposites in mindful attention simultaneously. 10)Lastly iRest introduces a practice that is perhaps unique in its use in the clinical context, that of turning to inquire into the nature of our own mind’s capacity to know, Awareness itself.
One of the reasons the MDs and Psychologists at Walter Reed think that the program works so well is that it helps the soldiers to accept what happened. The instructors and therapists actually like to use the word “welcome”.
You may think that the last thing the soldier wants to do is welcome the thoughts of their wounds but it helps them to take that first leap into the healing process. Without acknowledging the past and the confusing issues floating around unorganized in their minds healing cannot occur.
Another program doing amazing things through yoga for our soldiers that exists is Yoga Warrior. Yoga Warrior actually trains instructors to help Veterans suffering from PTSD but ALSO to help them deal with the stress of the war zone and maybe prevent some of the mental wounds that they come home with.
The method was developed by Lucy S. Cimini, RYT (500 hours), founding director, Yoga Warriors International, and Central Mass Yoga & Wellness in West Boylston, Mass.
